The grooming needs of a Chow Chow can be extensive due to their thick double coat. They require regular brushing, ideally two to three times a week, to prevent matting, especially in the undercoat. While they shed moderately throughout the year, shedding can increase seasonally, necessitating more frequent grooming sessions. Bathing should be done only as needed to maintain skin health, and regular inspections of their ears and teeth are important to ensure overall well-being.

Chow Chows possess a moderate energy level, requiring daily exercise to keep them healthy and happy. A couple of brisk walks and playtime in a secure area should satisfy their movement needs. While they enjoy physical activity, they tend to prefer moderate exercise over intense routines, so short, engaging sessions are beneficial, along with mental stimulation through puzzle toys or training exercises.

Training a Chow Chow can be challenging due to their independent and strong-willed nature. They are intelligent and can learn quickly, but they often require a patient owner who employs consistent, positive reinforcement techniques. Socialization is crucial from an early age to help them become well-rounded adults, as a Chow Chow that is not properly socialized may develop behavioral issues. The key to successful training lies in setting firm boundaries while also providing plenty of encouragement and rewards.

A balanced diet is essential for Chow Chows, as their relatively low metabolism can lead to obesity if overfed.
